president obama and mitt romney trying to down play expectations. joining us from washington to talk about it, democratic strategist donna brazil and anna navar navarro. abc "the washington post" poll, 55% of likely voters say president obama will compared to 31% who say romney will come out on top. it's pretty consistent with some earlier polling we've seen. donna, does it help or hurt the president that people are already going in thinking okay he's going to win this thing. >> that should reassure the president. i think he has to come across as confident tomorrow. he has a terrific record to tell the american people. mitt romney has been in dress rehearsal for this first debate now for five years. i suspect he'll be the more aggressive person tomorrow. but president obama should preempt any strike that mitt romney intends to aim at him, attack, attack, attack by hitting him with a very big question that could possibly knock him off his game plan and make him rely on those zingers that he's been working on. >> anna, what do you think? >> i think su

this is sort of the obama folks are going to console themselves this morning. this is the first presidential debate featuring an incumbent president where the challenger won. you go to reagan. you go to bush in '92. not clinton in '96. go to kerry in '04 and go to today. you got to say, is there something to it? where the incumbent sits there? annoyed he's on equal footing. out of practice, number two. and number three, sort of shackled in by how he knows the job is. not how he wishes the job was or what he was hoping it would be when he was a candidate. throw that all aside. mitt romney didn't just didn't just get himself a second look. the second most important thing that came out of the debate is it gave the republican party and it gave candidates down the ballot hope. something to believe in. and there was a lot of fear, a lot of fear from a a bunch of republicans here in denver saying i'm so relieved. i feared obama would win the debate and there would be a collapse of the republican ticket. >> there has to be something to it in the coming days. i look for

my advice is to the obama campaign, right. there were rumors this morning -- no, we're going to agree on this. there were rumors this morning that there might be a campaign shakeup, some staff numbers, here i think this is a terrible idea. the only thing the obama campaign needs right now is a good debate performance followed by biden and then a good debate performance by obama. and the more you talk about shaking up your staff, the more you play into the narrative that you're describing which then takes on a life of its own. again, just as it did for romney a few weeks ago. but i'm sure you were much happier about that. >> let me say that as someone a consultant to the campaign, the only person they'd probably fire is me. >> you've been stellar. >> besides that, i don't know where some of these rumors come from. that's an absolutely ridiculous rumor that we would shake up the. >> well, it was reported on msnbc and not cnn. >> well, didn't give anybody else any credit. mayor fenty, what's your advice? >> i think cornell is rig
